How is a violent crime rate of 43.63 per 1,000 residents even possible. Nobody is even close to that. And I thought my city was in shambles at 12.91

I wouldn't rely on these lists, too many factors that can skew the results. Notice how they are all small population areas at the top?

May have just been one bad year, even one really bad incident can drive up those statistics. Are the cops more proactive? Does the reporting differ? e.g. an assault is more likely to be reported in small town than city.

I think the best indicator of how violent an area is the murder rate, a dead body is a dead body and that statistic is not easily skewed. That also has to be considered with context, you can't use just one year.

Jesus, Camden doesn't even crack the top 20. Mind blowing indeed.

Darby is also much smaller. Has a population of 10,687 as of 2013.

Chester has a population of 30,046. Camden has a population of 76,903.

I would consider Chester the worst currently, then Camden, then Darby. Darby is small in population and square mileage, and one bad year can skew statistics for such a small town/city.

Darby is crummy, but it's not nearly as bad as Chester and Camden. Camden I believe has a lot of potential and future with all the job growth/companies relocating to it and the fact it is right across the river from Center City, Philadelphia with direct transit access to it.

I saw one of those lists that had Camden listed as #2 for 2015.

I have never seen Darby on a list of the most violent or dangerous cities in America. It is a dump yes, but nowhere as bad Chester or Camden.

The lists are very consistent with Camden and Chester.

I don't know about that. Darby has gotten seriously jacked up over the last decade. I mean, Michael Chitwood is interviewed almost daily about some of the most heinous crimes I can recollect. A lot of West Philly has been driven further west into Darby borough or at least they prey within the borough.

That's probably because such rankings seldom include municipalities that small since, as other posters have mentioned, they would subject the list to an excessive amount of skew and year-to-year variation.

That isn't to say Darby is a nice or safe place. It's just too small to fairly consider alongside larger cities. Even Chester is pushing the limit.

Why is Chester ranked the most dangerous in PA, then? Am I reading something wrong?
