Wife considering getting certified in PA and teaching in Bucks. Has 17 yrs with NYC and 30 above masters with a math license. Any teachers from bucks county on here can lend some input. How's the pension, benefits, vesting, tenure, district, work environment etc etc. With her qualifications at what tier salary would she be brought in as? We already did some research online, but looking for real world experience.

First be aware that there is no reciprocity between PA and New York State. New York State has reciprocity agreements (after 3 years of teaching) with all New England states plus a few others like Michigan. This is a big hurdle to overcome. Also, most PA school districts don't want to pay scale to new teacher hires, and 17 years teaching with MA +30 will put you at the top salary rung, which in Bucks can be in the $100,000 range plus fringes. Also, there is no shortage of math or science teachers anywhere in PA.

You may also want to consider teaching at a private school, of which there are quite a few in the greater Philly area. Much less stress than in the public school but pay isn't that great.

I agree with the above poster. In our district, they try very hard not to hire a new teacher with more than five years of experience. Not that they don't want the knowledge and experience, but they're just too darn expensive. Not to mention that Bucks county is a place that everyone would like to work, so it's fiercely competitive.

However, I would give it a shot. We're just people on a bulletin board!
