Most tourists aren't looking to go that far out of their way. Maybe if they had a car ... plus, the steaks at both those places are on par with Pat's and Geno's and there's absolutely NO atmosphere.

You will need to take a cab, but if you want an awesome unique restaurant, go to Beau Monde on 6th and Bainbridge.

If they're such a "tourist trap," why do they have long lines after concerts and sporting events? (Which are attended heavily by locals?)

To the op: Try McGillin's Ale House - Great atmosphere and good bar food. I wouldn't go too late, though, because it tends to get young and loud. Best afternoon/early evening bar in the city for middle-aged people.
And I highly recommend the Reading Terminal Market for lunch. Get an Italian hoagie from Salumeria and a waffle cone from Bassett's for dessert.
Yep, the OP said pub type food, and it don't get any better then McGillins. Bru across the way is good also. In fact the 13th St strip in that area has a lot of good eating.

And Capogiro for dessert!

Are the girls who work at Bru in those outfits something else or what? They make my eyes pop every time.

BTW, jj, beware of the chili nachos @McGillin's - the portion of chili has really shrunk.

You don't think sitting at a picnic table alongside Snyder Ave inhaling exhaust fumes is atmosphere

Lots of tourists go to Tony Luke's though.

Although many visitors to our great city do crave a Philly Cheesesteak, the OP talking about pub style food with a beer or two sounds like they are looking for some relaxation. Tony Lukes would hardly fit that. It is simply, stand in line, order your sandwich, then sit and get out as soon as down the last bite.

A couple of places you might check out in the Rittenhouse area (just a bit south of the Franklin Institute) if you want a good sit-down meal at a nice restaurant:

Tria
Vernick
Vedge
V-street
Zama
