I grew up in NE Philly and spent a few years in Ocala and now in Jacksonville. Overall, we love FL and never want to go back to Philly. Philly is historic but some areas are just old and depressing. The people tend to have a worn down and hurried attitude. The buildings, apartments, housing, everything is just old. In the winter, it is grey and miserable and everyone looks forward to the summer. Then in the summer, everyone is out trying to take advantage of the nice weather and creating traffic and pretty much all trying to do the same things at the same time. Some winters can be brutal. The first snow is fun but after that it is just a trudge of shoveling, digging the car out, laying down salt. I found myself staying inside and hibernating which made me feel very unhealthy.

I hate to sound doom and gloom but it is a huge transition from Orlando. On the positive side, there are plenty of law firms in downtown Philly and pay is pretty good. My cousin is a paralegal and has job hopped quite a bit so I assume the job market is fairly robust. You could easily take the train from NE Philly. Additionally, the medical facilities are second to none. You may have to travel to some undesirable areas to take advantage of specialists that are in the major medical facilities but it is great that they are there if you need them. There is no shortage of great doctors and medical professionals. There is also much more culture in Philly than in FL. There are so many things to see and do to keep you busy.

Overall, I think I felt about Philly, how you feel about Orlando. I was so ready to get out of there and experience a new place. I found that I loved FL, even with all of its flaws and you might feel that way about Philly too. Good luck with your decision. I know how hard it is! And having friends/family here will make a huge difference

ETA: There are some additional costs to living in Philly as you need to buy heavy winter clothes that are not needed in Philly. Snow boots, heavy coats, sweaters, etc. Also you pay state income tax in PA and have to have your car inspected yearly. Little things but it adds up.

Thank you so much Deeni, for your honest and informative reply. Luckily, my family has been there for around 20 years in Northeast Philly and we were able to get some inside details before making the choice. I can imagine the Winters will be brutal and I have never even seen snow. But, at the same time people are able to adapt to any condition I believe. I am just hoping that a new job environment, family, culture will help me feel better about the move. : )

This will likely not mean much too someone who has never seen snow. But the winters in Phila. are not like they are in New England, ie Boston. However in summer we can get a ton of humidity which will be quite familiar to you.

Thank you Kyb, I was told the same thing by a few people that not all Winters and Snow is the same. Like I've experienced 39 degree weather where I feel comfortable in jeans, boots and a jacket. While I've experienced 55 degree weather with crazy wind and It was paralyzing. Thank you for the insight!!

Only about a week or two during the summer will maybe feel like orlando. When I lived in orlando I would literally take a shower after only being out for 15 minutes in the summer. From an orlando perspective the whole summer is mostly cool and pleasant.

Is this something that most people would understand? I'm having a hard time justifying to people why I want to leave Chicago for good. :/

I don't think you need to justify anything to anyone. When I tell people that live in PA or have come from up north that I am moving they are so surprised and just don't get it. They make it out to be like the cold is such a factor. But, Florida is like the only place I can imagine that is always hot year round, so how are people living and surviving in other states I wonder?!

Regardless, what might be nice for one, might be torture for another. Perception.

Hi, I too am a Floridian looking to make the move to Philly early summer. For someone who has lived in Jacksonville my whole life, I too am fearful of the winters and snow. But I tell myself millions of people live there and make out okay, so it is doable.
At least you are still young.... I am a 40something single woman trying to make this move. You are wise to make the change now, I wish I had done it sooner.

Hello there, trust me you will cope with the change in weather. While I hear the weather can be harsh it's not as bad as some other states. In addition, I love the fact that there are other seasons to enjoy. I went in a tank top to buy something from someone we were outside talking for 10 minutes and I was sweating. I had just showered : (

Millions of people are living in these states and you adapt, that's human nature. I can understand if you are 90 and it's hard to drive or shovel snow but you're still very young yourself!!!!!! Good Luck!!!!

The Philly region had one big snow this past winter.... A couple of weeks ago it was in the 70s for a few days. Today it's supposed to reach about 75 and flowering trees are starting to bloom. It's beautiful right now! Clear blue sky, light breeze, low humidity. A perfect Spring day.

We get ample warning when snow is predicted.... usually a few days in advance. Local newscasts add more drama than is usually needed.
