Hey wait a second - I LOVE the Channel 6 Action News theme! That's one thing I miss about not living in the Philadelphia TV market.
One thing I don't miss is the Philadelphia local news is absolutely abysmal (Harrisburg news isn't a whole lot better either). HELLO, THERE ARE OTHER AREAS IN YOUR TV MARKET BESIDES A 30 MILE RADIUS AROUND CENTER CITY PHILADELPHIA! YOU CAN COVER THEM TOO. As much as I dislike western PA from my nearly 2 1/2 years of living out there, I will say the Pittsburgh (and Altoona/Johnstown) news is a lot better; they actually cover their entire viewing area. They aren't as good as Channel 16 in the SWB area, but they are at least in the same ballpark. The Philly stations aren't on the same continent.

I agree with this too. Granted, it's based in a large city and you can only afford the suburbs so much coverage, but there is definitely a parochial attitude in the Philly media that extends to the newspapers as well, giving the suburbs -- even the inner ones -- relatively little coverage. That's snubbing a lot of people in this country's fourth largest media market.

I was kind of surprised, given that Philadelphia is such a huge market, how bad the TV news is, on all the stations. Parochial is a spot-on way to describe it. I also expected the news productions to be a little more professional -- instead, I'm seeing weather mascots, shouting sports anchors, tacky teasers, and breathless reporters. I've seen better, more professional stuff from high school news productions.

Regarding the weather segments, I'd guess to some degree even today the bit of humor included in the segments likely has its roots in Jim O'Brien. O'Brien was a weather forecasting icon in Philadelphia on Channel 6 in the 1970's and early 1980's. He would talk about the "good guys" (sunny days) and the "bad guys" (storm clouds) and had humorous picture magnets of suns smiling and wearing sunglasses, white fair weather clouds with a slight smile, and gray storm clouds with a frown. EVERYBODY loved Jim O'Brien, and he was probably the single-biggest reason why Channel 6 had the top-rated newscast in Philadelphia during the era he was there. Unfortunately, O'Brien was killed in a skydiving accident on a Sunday in October 1983. During that evening's news the Channel 6 newscasters could barely get through the broadcast, they were so stricken with grief. (Many viewers were also upset by his death, including myself and others in my house.) Even Channels 3 and 10 mentioned his accidental death on their newscasts.

Along with the other great reasons mentioned, you can't forget Wing Bowl. Where else could you get 20,000 plus people to come out at 5:00 a.m. to watch a bunch of fat, out of shape men eat chicken wings? Ya gotta love it.

Carol Costello from CNN is interviewing for the cbs 3 opening. Regarding Alycia Lane, you would think somone so attractive would be able to lead a stable, carefree, pleasant life but trouble followed that girl around like the plague.
I've lived in different markets and one thing about Philadlephia is that they put a high priority on looks concerning their news anchors reporters etc.. In the other markets Ive been in they have normal average looking people reading the news, not so much in Philadelphia.
newmarlig you are a great poster but the wingbowl is a black eye to Philadelphia. I think I caught the herpes virus just looking at pictures of that mess.Ugh

I just moved from far NE Philly with my boyfriend (somewhat unwillingly ) to southern CA. I MISS HOME!
I love:
Flyers hockey! WIP, Coatesy
People in Philly are up front, real and have a sense of humor
Close to beautiful parks with trees and creeks, mountains and the beach. Springlake Beach, Ralph Stover- high rocks park, fishing at core creek park, Bryn Athyn Cathedral and Glencairn, Tyler Park, a few hrs from beautiful Ricketts Glen with it's many waterfalls and old hemlocks.
The seasons- all of them! Winter white and silver with clear blue skies and starry nights, fall with it's red and orange and crisp air, spring with it's flowers and scents and trees of pink, white and lavender, and summer with the fireflies, steamy nighttime swims and fireworks.
Food! Great steak sandwiches and pizza, Villa de Roma, buffalo wings, SangKee in Chinatown, Jim's soft pretzels (complete with dipping cheese or chocolate)
Real squirrels- the kind that are cute and curious and climb trees, not the silly skittish ground squirrels we have here in Cali.
The flower show at the Convention Center
95 traffic is a cakewalk compared to here.
World Cafe Live
You don't get judged for having a dirty car.
