As in Jones Beach or Hamptons wealth?

$3,500??? We rented a newer 2 bedroom house with a deck a block from the beach in Ocean City for $1,100 for a week. How can you think OC is bad with young kids? The OC boardwalk has everything a kid could want and is very clean and safe. My son had a ball there.
Long Island seems like it would be boring for kids....

The house we usually get is 4 bedrooms and sleeps 8, so I guess it's more money.
My kids like the boardwalk just fine, it's me who hates it. Ans as for bringing my kids to Long Island, nope - I refuse to battle that kind of traffic for any beach.

Yes, it is... Hello Atlantic City, Margate, Ocean City, Cape May, to name a few. It is the quickest way to get to the beach, or we say "down the shore"... Although, I do have a few friends that go to Ocean City, Maryland.. (too far for the hype). It's as a tradition as the cheesesteak itself !!!!

Every one in Philly goes down to the shore to go to the beach!! In the summer most folks don't even work on Friday so they can get in the traffic and head down to the shore.

Another question about the Jersey Shore
Even though I grew up in Northern NJ, I never went to the Jersey Shore as a kid (family is from NYC so we went to the Rockaways, Jones beach, etc.). I lived on Cape Cod for 7 years before moving to San Diego and will be moving to the Philly area. Are there any Jersey beaches/shore areas that are similar to the Cape (beach towns, but not commercial boardwalks right at the beach, lots of places for nature walks, bird watching, beach combing, as well as gentle enough water for kids to splash around in, etc.)?
Thanks

Spring Lake, Sea Girt, Bay Head, Strathmere, Avalon, Cape May
Island Beach State Park and the Southern tip of LBI might be your best bet for a real natural scene

First off, I've never been to Cape Cod, however, Cape May would probably be a good town. No boardwalk, just a "promenade" along the beach. It's an historic Victorian town, and the beach by the lighthouse is a state park and bird preserve. They have decent walks around the area and the area itself is known for bird watching. In the fall, there's also the "Wings N Water" festival near Stone Harbor and Avalon, which I went to when I was little (I'm assuming they still have it). They have walks around the estuaries and lots of little activites for kids. Avalon's another town that's quieter. It has a boardwalk, but from what I remember not much on it besides a few places to eat and maybe a small arcade.

I'll second the recommendations for Cape May and Island Beach. Both are very proud of their bird populations and have a number of hiking trails to explore.
