Default Wissinoming/Northeast

Hello everyone! I am looking at moving to NE Phila. I found a place that according to the map looks like the neighborhood is called Wissinoming. The block the home is on is right next to Mt. Sinai Cemetary, on the East side of it. What information could you tell me about the area? I have seen a lot of posts on here that simply say an area is bad or good, but not why. So, whether you think this area is good or bad, please let me know what particulars make it that way. Thank you all for your help!!!

While many people live in that area, I personally wouldn't. It is right by Frankford Ave, with the el running above it, and my impression of it is that it is drug infested. Often there are people loitering and they look sketchy to me, I wouldn't feel safe walking at night, even with someone. But my mother in law lives in Wissinoming, and her block is relatively safe, considering. With your block, it's the area around bridge and pratt, and the cemetary would make me feel less safe, but I suggest you check it out yourself, or perhaps someone living there can give you a better perspective.

Pardon my gullibility, but would the criminal element actually hang out in a cemetery?

From my recollection, Wissonoming is a working-class neighborhood. It's primarily white, I believe, but may be fairly diverse by NE Philly standards. Nearby Mayfair may be a more pleasant alternative. Any NE Philly community that borders the city line should be considered as well.

In other words, I don't mean to sound naive, but that sounds unreal to me that you'd have a group of dealers, etc. loitering around in a cemetery. (Same goes for a church.) Hanging out after hours in parks, school yards and so on isn't so surprising however.

well, there are some cemetaries that aren't well monitored, or locked up at night, and I know there are a few in Philly. It's a big cemetery, and the surrounding area isn't great. There have been robberies in that cemetery in the past (people loitering have been held up, mostly kids having keg parties, or smoking pot.) So, I'd consider that unsafe. But they are neighborhoods, with good people living in them, I just wouldn't live there because the area to me feels unsafe. It's declining. I would visit it though, I think different people have different perspectives.

Wissinoming is a changing area. Some parts of it are still nice, while others aren't. For a really nice area where most of the neighborhoods are well take care of, safe, and family friendly, you really have to go further northeast off the I95 Academy Road exit...east Torresdale and Crispin Gardens to name a couple. Anything north of Holmsburg is more desireable.
