Hah! Philadelphia has THREE subways, not including the subway-surface trolleys.

Of course, you are right. I should have said a subway system.

I know Philly was voted Friendliest Big City some years back and still ranks as the friendliest Northeast city and friendlier than LA as well...maybe you just found your people so you haven't noticed...

Yeah, I just didn't want people who are unfamiliar with Philadelphia that the City of Brotherly Love is one of those places with one dinky rail line in place.

depends on where you live...stay out of the inner city - high crime rates (violence, murders)...

I definately would recommend Philadelphia to a young single. The nightlife, restaurants, culture, shopping, etc is great. It is also relatively affordable compared to other large cities. A friend of mine rents a large condo on the water for 1400/month with utilities. You can look around for something cheaper, but that gives you an idea of what you're looking at. If center city is overwhelming, many professionals live in the Manayunk/ Roxborough and East Falls neighborhoods which are not in center city. Chestnut Hill and West Mount Airy are also havens for diverse crowds and often young professionals or families with easy commutes to Center City. If you're apartment building offers parking included with your rent, I would recommend center city for the experience. If it looks like you'll be shelling out money you don't have, look into the smaller more suburban philly neighborhoods I mentioned. They also have their own set of restaurants and nightlife.
