This is hilarious. I found this site today as I am kicking around moving out of Phila and now you all tell me there are two nice people here. Actually, not suprised what eveyone feels about the lack of love in the city. Being a transplant here has been rough.

Hey, I'm with you on the amenities Philadelphia has to offer and being a really good place in many people's eyes, but Philly still isn't exactly Friendlyville USA.

Even I have to admit that in my lifetime Philly has never quite been The City That Loves You Back (an old tourism slogan from the 90's ). I think many people tend to have gruff exteriors until they get to know you, then some will give you the shirt off their back. I'll concede that one aspect I didn't like in the city was customer service on the retail level. Compared to cities I've visited in the South and Midwest, the "typical" worker I encountered was often indifferent at best and practically hostile at most. I do think people's attitudes improve somewhat out in the suburbs a bit. But I guess that's the price one pays to live in the dense Northeastern Corridor.

Reason: If they *really really* like you, they'll give you the shirt off "your" back too! ;) LOL

Tone509 - I think you were very close to dead on in your post. I definitely agree about the rudeness of an unfortunately too high of a number of people working in customer service at retail establishments. Of course, that's not true with every establishment in Philadelphia by any means, but it does seem that way with more of them than you'd expect.
The one place that sticks out in my mind where the staff is particularly rude most of the time is the McDonald's at 30th Street Station.

CHIP72,
I remember when the CVS opened at the corner of 11th and Market where Woolworth's used to be. The management and staff were so overly friendly, I almost wondered whether they had been taken over by aliens. LOL Not more than a few months later, they had settled into the familiar Philadelphia indifference mixed with "Why are you bothering me?"
But yeah, I'm sure that commissioned salespeople at Boyd's, for example, have a different attitude than the person behind the cash register at the 30th Street McDonald's.

Yeah I would agree with that...your neighbors may be great people, but the po-po's working at crappy jobs in the retail/service sectors, are just plain rude.

Reason: referenced post edited; also, you lose "cool points" for misspelling "Philadelphians". ;)
