When I visit sunbelt cities like Austin,Albuquerque, and Phoenix the service people are so friendly and nice(cab drivers, store clerks etc.)Lot of is probably the perfect weather and laid back lifestyle. But moreso I think there is much less class warfare as you get away from the East coast.Extreme poor basically restricted to servicing the middle class and rich is just a bad combination. The under class service sector in the big cities is a mess. It just comes down to families not being raised correctly which acts as a vicious cycle.
But its not the entire east coast imo, its more relegated to the cities. The suburban areas ,especially the further you get away from the city the customer service is much friendlier imo.Marple,Ridley,Abington is fine and the further n+w you go places like Exton,West Chester,Doylestown is a pleasure to go shopping and dining.

You mean the whole world isn't like this?
I've been in Philly for over eight years now. First University City, then Germantown, and for the last four Center City. At first, I found the difference between folks in Philly and other places I had lived quite striking, and not in a good way. Lately, I find myself in despair feeling that the whole world is like this. So thanks for reminding me--it's just Philadelphia, the "city of brotherly love." And I can move!!!

I've been working in center city for 15 years and I agree with you. I've tried many things like being friendly in a cautious kind of way. Or in a more friendly kind of way. Nothing works. It's not a friendly city, it's a hostile city.

Youse are right
The unfriendliness and attitudes exhibited by the fine citizens of Philly is so unnecessary, I think it stems from people wanting to come off as being street smart and "hard", kind of a protective measure. It really is depressing, I moved from Pittsburgh where it is a very friendly city as long as you're white, that being the flipside. I still prefer Philly to most other cities that I lived in or had extended visits though; there is an energy here that you can only find in a handful of places.

That's the plan. I may end up sleeping on the beach. --Poor in CA is preferable to poor in PA--but don't tell anyone!

New knock on Phila.: 5th most miserable city | Philadelphia Inquirer | 02/12/2008 (broken link)
Yeah, not a new phenomenon--rudest city, 5th most miserable, etc.
It's just a stressful place to live for the working/"used to be" middle class.
