We're moving to Philly suburbs from southern California. I heard that PA has the highest incidence of Lyme Disease in the country.

How much of a concern is it to people living in PA? Is it only a problem if you go hiking?

Thanks.

I know someone who got it in the near Philly burbs just from being an avid gardener. This person is not a hiker. There have been plenty of deer nearby(even within the city limits...Philly has a huge municipal park) so, yes, it's something to be aware of.

But, truthfully, I don't think it's something most Philadelphians(city or 'burbs) think very much about.

It's not the worst, but it's toward the top of the list.

As kyb said, you can pick them up in a yard, but it's not that common. It's happened to me a couple of times, but I used to do a lot of gardening and yard work. Thankfully, they don't like lawns. Your biggest concern is in wooded areas and tall grass and weeds. That's easy enough to work around, though.

A tick can be on your skin for many hours before it attaches. Even than, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll get Lyme disease. http://www.fourseasonspediatrics.com...r-a-tick-bite/

I used to be an avid hiker and have never gotten Lyme disease in PA or the region.
