My husband is considering a job in Johnson & Johnson Springfield. We are moving away from the Bay Area California bevayse if our inability to afford a decent home here. He has 3 potential offers and I am trying to figure out which would suit our needs best. Will really appreciate your inputs. Which areas would be best to live in?

Background: non-white couple with 2 elementary school/daycare kids. Make 250K $ annually combined.

Priorities:

- good public schools and a safe area
- commute under 20 minutes to work
- be able to afford at least a 3-bedroom house comfortably (for reference we pay 3500$ rent per month right now for a 2 bedroom and looking to drastically reduce that amount). We are also open to buying if under 500k.

Our other options are relocating to terrytown, NJ and San Diego (lovethe weather but may be too expensive)

Thanks in advance

Looking for inputs on places to stay, general information about the area, etc.

Post answers to the form found at Questions For Future and Potential Residents and general information.. You have lots of options; your response to the form's questions will whittle down the field a bit.
(Did you mean Tarrytown NY? Google couldn't locate Terrytown NJ.)

Springfield, Delware County? If so, then you will have dozens of excellent towns to choose from.

When are you moving? March - April 2018
Where are you coming from? Bay Area
Why are you moving? To save money and be able to afford a 3-bedroom house
Where will you be working? Springfield
Have you been here yet? No

Will you buy or rent? Rent first and buy soon
If buying, are you looking for a house or a condo? How much can you spend? Would love something under 700K; lesser the better. Can buy a condo first and scale up later
If renting, are you looking for an apartment, a townhouse or loft? How much can you spend? Around 2.5K per month (at least a 3 bedroom apartment or townhouse)
Do you prefer hi-rise or walk up? No preference

Do you have a preference of living in a NJ or PA suburb? No preference; whatever has milder winters
(If you answered NJ - post your answers here: http://www.city-data.com/forum/phila...-philadelphia/)

Are you married or single? Do you have children? Married; kids are 3 and 7 years
Do you prefer public or private schools? Public
Do you have pets? No
Do you want or need a yard? Nice to have; not mandatory
Are you keeping a car? Yes
Do you prefer bustling activity or calm and quiet? Bustling activity, but both work

What do you want to be closest to?
Work - Yes its very important to us; want under a 15 min commute
Shopping - Not important
Basic services (supermarket, drugstore, etc.) Not important
Nightlife Not important
Train or subway stations Not important

Do you want to live with people of a similar age, race, religion or sexual preference or do you prefer a diverse neighborhood? Diverse

I would look into Media, PA. Media borough as well as Middletown, Edgemont, and Upper Providence fall under the 19063 zipcode.

A quick summary, a wonderful area anchored by a very walkable downtown with tons of shops and restaurants, and a Trader Joes. A lot of big box shopping is also within minutes in any direction. The borough itself is mostly townhomes/ rowhomes with a few singles mixed in. Larger homes and properties can be found in the other towns I mentioned just outside of the borough.

The Rose Tree Media School District serves those towns, beyond excellent public school system. A a majority of the neighboring school districts are also excellent.

There are a lot of families in the area, a ton of recreation, Tyler Arboretum, Ridley Creek State Park, Linvilla Orchards, a lot of walking trails, swim clubs etc. The housing stock is varied. Anything from small cape cods, townhomes, to very large single family homes. $500k is a great number for a townhome or 3 bedroom house. A larger home 4/5 bedrooms, would be closer to the $700k number.

There are several other great options in the area, but I will start there.
Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Media is a knee-jerk recommendation for several people on this forum. Media is a lovely little town and certainly worth looking into, but honestly, if your priorities are schools and safety with a 700k budget, you're not really going to go wrong anywhere in that area, whether it's Springfield, Media, Swarthmore, or wherever. All of the school districts are excellent - Springfield, Marple-Newtown, Strath Haven, as well as Rose Tree-Media.

J&J uses telecommuting at most facilities and shared offices.

Much consolidation is going on, wonder if hubby will be travelling to other PA and NJ facilities?
