It is sad that the radio station had to event something for Philly people to do in lieu of an actual Super Bowl. But, hey, if people are having fun, then go for it.

I think many of the people who complain about the Philadelphia traditions such as the wing bowl, mummers etc. are mostly likely transplants from other places with no appreciation. I wonder why these people even live here? What were you expecting?

That is very true, that seems to be an American mentality in general. Like when Americans go to international counties and expect everything to be like America or cater to Americans, and when its not "we" think its weird or abnormal.

I was born and raised in the Philadelphia area (suburbs) and everyone around me knew about the wingbowl, but most people didn't really care about it, they didn't trash the event, but it just wasn't on anyone's radar, which I think is the case for most of the region.

I personally do not like the mummers though, I think its an odd event with a lot of nastiness in-between the lines, but the difference with me is that I just don't think about instead of starting a thread on city data about it.

Tbh, I don't think that poster lives in Philly.

There are Brazilian samba groups, from Rio, who absolutely "get" the mummers. So if some transplants don't "get" them it's their loss.

There are things about their history I absolutely loathe ..the old black face minstrel stuff.

But, Oh, Dem Golden Slippers, was written by James Bland a black man who is buried in Mt Moriah Cemetary in Kingsessing.
Before the cemetary was closed some mummers would visit his grave on a regular basis.

Philadelphia has so much more to offer, cuisine wise, then greasy, overpriced, obesity inducing cheesesteaks. Also, this city is way too reliant on the car for such a dense, compact East Coast city.

A city needs a solid dose of rotating transplants to be healthy. Every successful major city in the world is transplant and immigrant heavy. A city entirely composed of natives gives us Philadelphia circa 1985. A city full of “outsiders” gets us Philadelphia 2017. Which would you rather have?

A bar in old city just closed (Irish Pol) and YET ANOTHER cheese steak place opened up. That makes 58.

The hell is going on?!

Agreed.

But where are you in that you don't think there are tons of transplants here, right now, today?
