I plan to visit when I am in town. Is it friendly to single folks?

I definitely prefer South's menu.

Yes, it's definitely friendly to singles and the food was great. The music room is small (holds 70 people) so you feel like you're among friends. It was great!

I find Chris's Jazz Cafe to be better for singles than South tbh. South is great, and it has better food and prices than Chris's, but the room with jazz is setup with tables discouraging misc mingling. You can hang at the bar, but it's outside the jazz room.

Chris's allows you to hang at the bar (which does get crowded), but you can see/hear the jazz from there. Although, there is a reduced cover charge even at the bar area.

That is okay. I do not like siting at the bar. Good food and entertainment are enough to keep be occupied.

Went to Chris' Jazz Cafe last night by myself for jazz and jambalaya (good!) and had a great time. I think I agree with AJNEOA that Chris' might be better for singles. It's smaller and more intimate and although the bar was crowded, it was fun and lively. Also, there is a TV above the bar so you can watch and listen to the music without going into the main room. Not sure I agree about the prices, though. The food prices seem to be about the same although the choices at South are better. I only drink wine, so I can't vouch for cocktail prices.

I need to add an entry on the "and maybe dance a little" front:

Concourse Dance Bar, 1635 Market Street.

The "Concourse" in question is the one in Penn Center, which this subterranean disco opens onto. (It occupies what had been The Turf Club off-track betting parlor.)

Robert Drake, the DJ I mentioned above in connection with Club Mousai, now has a Sunday-night dance party there.
