Default Is There Any Tenison Beteen Blacks and Puerto Ricans in Philly??

Hello, I'm new to City Data and I had a few questions maybe someone could help me out with. Why notice don't you see many Blacks and Puerto Ricans together much like in New York. Is there much tenison between Blacks and Puerto Ricans in Philadelphia? Maybe a Boricua could help me out with the answer to this.

I can't really answer your question, but I would have to say that Puerto Ricans in Philadelphia seem to have a reputation (among other Latinos*) for being cliquish and for falling at the extreme end of the scale as far as Puerto Rican nationalist pride. (Not necessarily in a really political, pro-independence sense, but in a cultural pride sense.) This is in comparison to Puerto Ricans in New York and New Jersey.

On the other hand, I haven't really noticed tension between African Americans and Puerto Ricans here, but being a white non-Hispanic I might just be too busy being involved in my own racial melodramas.

Of course, I've gotten to know some Puerto Ricans myself (and generally like them), so I don't mean to say that they totally keep to themselves, just that I have been told they tend to be more cliquish than other Puerto Rican communities.

*Granted, my sample size isn't huge.

I know there use to be a huge PR community in N. Philly near Spring Garden (17th and Green St area), but I think gentrification moved them out. Not sure where they are now.

To my knowledge, many Hispanics tend to live in the Kensington neighborhood of North Philly. The heart of the area is El Bloque de Oro or the Golden Block on 5th and Lehigh.

To be honest, I didn't grow up in the city proper so I'm not necessarily the authority on relations between the Black and Puerto Rican communities. They may not interact as much as they do in New York but there is not the tension that appears to be infamous in Los Angeles.

Drive down N. 2nd Street between Tioga and Girard (roughly, this is going on memory). You can tell when you're there, and if not, look for a big mural about Puerto Rico.

No way I'm driving around there. But, I am cruising it on Google Maps Street View.
Humboldt Park in Chicago is a lot safer (and the PR pop. much bigger)-I'll just hafta wait till I get back there.

Naw, no tension whatsoever. If anything might be minor clashes, but that is usually just personal stuff, nothin race or ethnic releated. Most Ricans and Blacks get along just fine and some roll together.
