Hello! I’m moving from out of state to Philadelphia soon, and recently secured an apartment around Fairmount & 7th. How safe is the area?

I don't think that's a bad area. Poplar isn't going to be as hip or gentrified as Northern Liberties a couple blocks to the east, but it should be OK. Poplar has a somewhat notorious history with the Richard Allen projects, which was one of the worst public housing ghettos in the city, but that was demolished decades ago and much like Queen Village after Southwark was leveled, the safety issues related to drugs, gangs, etc tied to the projects have gone away (or least moved somewhere else in the city).

Yeah, you'll be OK. My buddy owns a rental in that complex right there. The area has gone through dramatic improvement as NL stretches west. The only real remaining issue are the Richard Allen projects immediately neighboring the gated-in complex you're referring to. Just use common sense and be aware of your surroundings and you'll be fine. Also, use the gate on Fairmount b/t 7th and 8th whenever possible as opposed to the one on the corner of 7th and Fairmount or the gate on 8th. The gate I'm referring to borders all good sections.

Why would you even bring up the Richard Allen projects which , as you point out, have been gone for a long time?
7th and Fairmount is just north of the Edgar Allen Poe house.

I thought the projects immediately north of the EA Poe house were part of the the Richard Allen housing? Regardless, to the OP, there are some rather rough projects on 7th and Green that you’ll want to avoid.
