Heya. My husband and I are moving from Australia to Philly in jan 2020 with our 6 year old rough Collie dog and we have never lived abroad and was wanting some advice for apartment living in philly with dogs. Australia is not very dog friendly so we have only ever lived in standalone houses with big yards. We have seen apartments listed saying suitable for big dogs but wondering how they work? Can I take the dog in the elevator/staircase to take him outside for walks? Is there other considerations I need to make? He is a big dog but very apartment friendly and doesn’t bark or require much room (two walks a day is all he needs). Husband has a job near the airport so we are looking to live between the city and airport (budget being $1100 a month) don’t need much room (single bedroom is fine).

Any advice will be much appreciated!

Is your husband looking to commute via train or car? There is an airport train which only takes 18 minutes from Center City to the Airport. Trains run every 30 mins.

$1100 wont rent you anything large in Center City, but if you go further west to West Philadelphia you definitely can find something in your price range with a reasonable commute.

Philadelphia is quite dog friendly to be frank.

South Philly and West Philly will be your best options for between the airport and Center City (if that is what you mean by between the airport and city). I would personally look at West Philadelphia around Clark Park and Cedar Park. Even if you do not feel you need much room, I think you will like your options better there because many places have small yards and you will not have to worry about elevators, etc. The parks nearby are great for dog walking. South Philly is mostly smaller row homes which fit your bill for little space. I think you can find something within your budget in Point Breeze there. Consider that the parks there are not as big as the areas I pointed out in West Philly.

I have never heard of dogs being barred from using elevators or staircases (save for buildings that do not allow for dogs in the first place). My guess would be if you end up in an actual apartment building that is dog friendly, it of course is fine to use the stairs, etc.
