Living in Spruce Hill does not guarantee a child's attendance in the SA school.

OP said they are empty nesters. Shouldn't matter.

The poster specified a 30 minute max commute so that will eliminate several places that would likely suit them.
Exactly! People.....

A person's commute includes more than just the train ride!
When I say commute I mean door to door....including walking, driving -- and/or if applicable -- any public transit, finding a parking space, parking in a garage/lot -- and walking from there to work. And vice versa going home.

And if you can get from even Wynwood to work door-to-door in downtown Philly in 30 minutes, with enough time so you won't be late.....I'd like to hear about that. Heck even from Chestnut Hill I don't know if that can be accomplished in 30 minutes.

Train rides from Chestnut Hill stations the train ride alone is more than 30 minutes. And the train from Wynnwood about 30 minutes. From Ardmore, a coupe of minutes more -- and that's the EARLY a.m. rush hour trains! Add 5 minutes or more for trains in the heart of rush hour.

Commute times in the Philly area are not as short as they used to be.

Chestnut Hill sounds like it would be good for you, since schools are not a factor. 30 min train ride, beautiful area, and just about the best downtown in the area outside of center city. Media is another area that I’m not personally as familiar with, but people recommend a lot on this forum which I think also meets your criteria. Ambler could be another, though the housing stock in the borough itself (where you could actually walk to the town from your house) is limited. Train from Ambler is about 35 min.
