From the LEHIGH VALLEY I'd definitely recommend the I-78/I-81/I-77 route. However, from Philadelphia I think the I-95/I-85 route or some variation thereof (most likely involving US 301) would work best; you go too far out of your way to get over to I-81 from Philadelphia to go south.

Cityeda is on a distinguished road
I am also trying to drive a similar route from Allentown to Washington DC on Thursday night. I wanted to see if the I-78 to I-81 to I-270 is a better route than going through Philadelphia and Baltimore. Since I'll be heading out of Allentown around 4, I thought it would be better to avoid Philly altogether. What do you think?

From Allentown I would definitely avoid Philly and Baltimore at rush hour.
