There are many safe areas in Philadelphia. Each of the neighborhoods has its own personality. Specify what you are looking for, and folks can suggest some places you should consider. Do you need to be close to a job, for instance? Is nightlife important? Prxomity to mass transit?

I would recommend Washington Square West, if you're looking in Center City, actually anywhere in CC is pretty safe .

Besides center city (and surroundiing areas including Queen Village, Bella Vista and Northern Liberties) being safe, parts of South Philly are safe, Chestnut Hill/West Mt. Airy are safe, Roxborough, Manayunk are safe, the greater northeast is safe. And they are all within the city limits and I know I've left safe places out.

East Oaklane is quiet and safe. It's a little pocket between some not-so-hot areas, but they stay away for the most part. However, because of their proximity it's cheaper.
