Hockey is sport #4 in this town, with a limited fan base. Their wins didn't impact the whole city.

The Phillies in 1980 did. As did the sixers in 83. But then another drought until the next century.

Italians always want to think their neighborhoods are somehow special. I was in west philly, overbook, and there was no violent crime there either. We roamed the streets until sunset without fear, and our parents didn't fear for us. Plus we didn't have mob violence - no mob.

Crime came with drugs in the 90s.

I do remember center city area after the sun went down was pretty desolate.

Since the Flyers were mentioned, one thing I remember well. Don't remember the year, but the Flyers had a exhibition game scheduled against the Russians on the Saturday after New Years Day. Can not remember what network was to air it, but it was the same network that had the Mummers Parade. Anyways it rained NYD and the parade was moved to the same day as the game. Needless to say the network aired the parade live, and the taped game later that night. Boy were the Flyers fans pissed.
I think that it was 'CAU carrying the parade at that point. They were owned by CBS at that point.

I don't know anybody who cares about the Sixers.

So why did Will Smith get sent away to Bel Air?

Thankfully, my neighborhood is still pretty much like that.

Don't forget too that nothing was allowed to be built higher than Billy Penn's hat. Or that was the "gentleman's agreement", anyway. So our skyline wasn't keeping up with those of the other cities but we, being Philadelphians, didn't want change so we were vehemently opposed to One Liberty Place being built in the 80s. But now I'm so glad folks more visionary than we were went ahead with it. I love our skyline now, particularly the view from the Expressway at dusk coming east toward Center City. Blows me away every time.

Nah ... they literally don't care.

I usually get on the Flyers and Sixers bandwagons, but I'm done with them and their leagues. The only relevance they have to me is I hope they never win again.
