We are considering purchasing a home in Chester County (West Chester, Exton, Paoli, Malvern areas). We saw that a large number of houses are heated using oil heat. One house we are fond of is a 50 year old single family 3 small bedrooms, 2 small baths house that is average size. If anyone has something similar and is heating with oil heat, could you let me know how much oil you require to heat your house over the winter? This information would be very useful. Thanks very much for you time.

Depends.... insulation? Windows? Teenagers?

I don't heat with oil but I do know an average home that is 2000 sq. ft. requires about 5 ton of anthracite for the heating season assuming adequate insulation and good windows.

5tons = approx 180 gallons of fuel oil so you're probably in the neighborhood of 900 gallons per year.

I've got a 1,280 square foot house and use about 500 gallons a season.

But I'm cheap and keep the thermostat at 65.
