Thumbs down Questions about moving to Philly with young children?

We currently live in Berks County, but my husband might be accepting an intern in the city. We decided it would be best to relocate. What areas/neighborhoods are the safest and best to be with two young children ages 3 and 4? Also, what are the cheapest areas (what is average rent for a 2 BR?) We will be working off of a lower income to start since he is not getting paid for his internship.

Oh for God's sake! Is that really what you think of us? Just wrap some garlic around your head and a cross around your neck and you will be safe.

Bryson...all cities have bad sections. I was raised right outside of Philadelphia...I know not all areas would be wise to raise my children in. It's not a matter of what I think, it's the truth. I have been out of the city for too long to know which areas are the better areas now...hence the reason I asked this question.

Where will your husband be interning? Will he need to use public transportation. Also, please define "cheap." It's not the same for all people. This is a large area, there is no "average" rent. It varies greatly. Having a number will help point you in the right direction.

You also want to think of your children, if you will be sending them to the public school system. Go onto the district website and look at the grades/scores for each school. In philly, you go to the school you are zoned for, so you don't want to be living in an area with a crappy school.

Check out Havertown, Drexel Hill, Springfield...they all are close to the city and offer public transportation, are safe and Havertown and Springfield have good public schools...

Consider Mt. Airy... if you need to rent an apartment check out Upsal Gardens. It is 1/2 block from the train station... very convenient, child friendly and in a pretty area. The rent is also reasonable.
Good Luck

Default living in Mt Airy

I second moving to Mt Airy. We've lived in the Northwest for seven years now with three small children and we love many things about it. There are lots of families with young children, rents are more reasonable than in center city, and it's a beautiful part of town too. The public schools are not great though so you may be looking at private schools for kindergarten.

If you're looking for a good preschool for your kids, I can recommend the Cooperative Nursery school on Lincoln drive. My second son just finished two years there and it's a great way to meet other families.

Default Cheap

Anywhere that is cheap! Like South Philly, but South Philadelphia is not the safest place. Fairmount has some good rent, and is very safe.
