Question Best place to stay in Philly on vacation

Hi,
I'm looking to spend some time in Philly on vacation with my boyfriend. We're trying to figure out where it would be best to stay. We're interested in the historical locations and museums, the nightlife (clubs [especially any 80s/EBM/goth/darkwave-type clubs], breweries [I love microbreweries], concerts, etc.), walking tours, great food... basically we're young and we want to have a blast. We want to stay in close proximity to these things and yet still keep our room around $100/night. Okay, maybe $120. Any suggestions?
Thank you!

The area you would want to stay in is Old City. It has all the things you're looking for. However, finding a hotel in that price range would be tough. If you're willing to use Hotwire (prepaid and non-refundable) you might be able to find something. If you look at Hotwire, they wrongly call the area "Olde Town." If you need some guidance using Hotwire, send me a pm.

I concur that Old City is where you want to be... and that using an opaque site like Hotwire or Priceline.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if there was still a club in Philly that specialized in the music you like. Take a look at the nightlife sections in philadelphiaweekly.com and citypaper.net to get an idea of what's being played where.

I agree - Old City is the area for you. Not sure about where to stay, but I agree that maybe Hotwire or Priceline may be helpful in finding a reasonably priced room.

The Holiday Inn at Independence Mall (4th & Arch) may be one of the less expensive although the town is flooded with tourists in the summer and all hotel rooms are at a premium.

i always had luck with hotwire when my family would come down or when I'd go back to visit - last time I was at a hotel next to rittenhouse square for around $85 a night - great deal

either old city or center city should work fine

Great -- thank you to all of you! I booked the Comfort Inn on the river for $120/night using hotels.com. Google maps said it was pretty near to the historical stuff, the beer on 2nd and Chestnut, and two clubs like the ones I described. Tone509, if you want to know where the ones I found are, I'm happy to pass it on.
Any recommendations on ways to get into the city (e.g., Amtrak, Greyhound)?

Ok nevermind, I checked them out and booked Greyhound. Thanks again! However, if there are any places that are absolutely amazing but only Philly insiders know, I'd be interested in those too...

Since you mentioned walking tours, you should check out ushistory.org. Click on Seven Walking Tours for good self-guided tours of Philly neighborhoods. You'll probably enjoy the Independence Hall area and Society Hill. For paid tours, the Lights of Liberty tour is a good nighttime option: Welcome The Lights of Liberty Show

The Rodeway Inn on Walnut is not bad.
