Usually I'm outed after making the mistake of asking for a glass of "wooder"

Yea like you're so much better than the people who actually live in the city

Let me first say that I live in the city and don't feel ashamed to say I do. Secondly I'm African American and I would like to say that this has got to be one of the most bigoted cities in the US. The people here are so segregated and its a very polarizing place to live. SOME people in the suburbs think that their better than people who reside in the city; mostly because at least half of the population is black. Granted there is alot of crime in the city but not everyone is a criminal; just like not everyone who lives in the suburbs is a saint ... no really they aren't. And to the poster who said that people presently living in the suburbs built this city...please. Improve the economy of Philly and alot of the problems would disappear. I'm young and I just want to get away from here. It is so toxic.

In defense of those who took offense to the OP's ridiculous original message the rebuttals have been fairly tame and in no way have crossed the line imo. OP was looking to stir up trouble and he/she succeeded famously.
No one here said or insinuated that suburbanites were better than city residents or that non blacks were better than blacks. The only thing that was mentioned were the contrast in the stability of neighborhoods between the suburbs and the inner city neighborhoods of Philadelphia. This weekend 11 shot-4 killed in Philadlephias notorious hoods.
As far as the comment concerning who built Philadlephia. Not to discount the black influence and good things they presented to Philadelphia over the years but the demographics of Philadlephia had been 90% + white as recently as 60 years ago. Most of the people now living in the Philadelphia suburbs had a parent, grandparent, or great grandparent grow up in the city of Philadlelphia. Every text book involving Philadelphia history will tell you the once great neighborhoods of West + North Philly were built by ethic Europeans, Jews and blacks who made up about 5% of Philadlephias population.
Lastly The inner city of Philadlephia,Camden,Chester etc need to stop screwing around and waiting for everyone else to solve their problems. These communities need to start creating their own economies, thats how it works. They need to start building their own small businesses, homes, markets. They need to start producing their own school teachers ,lawyers, counselors and productive citizens who can go to a supermarket and not worry about getting a .38 jammed into their rib cage.

Plenty. At college I'd tell people I'm from Philly, one would get all excited "oh! Me too! What part?!". After I said East Oaklane (and, usually, explained where it is), the response was always "oh.....um....I'm from Malvern/Cherry Hill/Bucks County/Lansdale/other suburb."
I don't mind so much as I think it's funny. Although I've definitely gotten people who live an hour away from the city limits who claimed to be "bad-a**" since they were "from Philly."

I had to laugh when I read this. I'm with the one poster who says they don't want people associating them with living in Philly.
My fiance will often reference Philly as "where we live"and I always correct him because we don't live in Philly. We live in the burbs in Montco. BIG difference LOL

It's a handy reference when I'm talking to all my friends in Wisconsin and Colorado and New Mexico and ... They may not know exactly where Philadelphia is, but at least they've heard of it.
But if I say "I work in Philadelphia," I wouldn't be stretching the geographical truth.
