First of all this is Philly, if the state was also named Philly then you would be Philadelphia. Philly is the only municipality in Philadelphia County (hence you cant even use the LA or San Diego county type logic). You have to live inside Philly city limits to be Philadelphia, or at least have grown up there. Otherwise you are Philly area, like the Bay Area in CA.
You dont hear people in Short Hills NJ saying they live in Newark do you?
Quakertown? Thats farther from Philly than Hammonton, NJ is.
I will say Boston is guilty of doing this. People 45 minutes out like 2 counties away tell you theyre from Boston and they live in Worcester or Lowell.

Maybe it's different when you're talking about Philly cheesesteaks.

That's designed just so people who can't or don't want to live in the actual city can brag about where they live, like it really means anything to anyone else.
Part of the superficiality of cities.

I personally think everyone in Philly wishes they could say they were from Pittsburgh! Philly has alot of envy for the Burgh I think. And I know for a fact that you guys secrectly wave your TERRIBLE TOWELS in support of the STEELERS! Who could blame 'yinz' though.

StuckPa, Head on over to the Burgh. It's the "poor man's San Fransisco". Pittsburgh's just like San Fran without the $ and good weather or beautiful views of the ocean. We also got a WAAAAAAAAY better football team.

You're a funny guy there, Welder, but I think when most Philadelphians think of Pittsburgh, it's with a certain amount of respect, sports rivalries notwithstanding. Besides being the "poor man's SF", I also look at the city as being the gateway to the Midwest while still retaining the benefits of PA, such as they are.
