Philly Wannabe's
Folks, with all due respect, would you individuals who reside within the suburbs, e.g. Quakertown, Doylestown, Paoli, Devon, Bucks County, DELEWARE, etc., please refrain from trying to impress your girlfriends, boyfriends, acquaintances and family members by telling them that you are from Philly. You are not from Philly! You are from the suburbs of Philadelphia.
It' not rocket science people, if your zip code does not lie within the boundaries of the City of Philadelphia, you do not qualify to wear the proud badge and having the distinction of being from Philly.
Once again folks, if you live within the boundaries of the City of Philadelphia you are from Philly. If you live someplace else...well, with all due respect...you are just a Philly wannabe.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

I live in Philly, and it's fine with me if people want to say they are from here rather than the suburbs. I think it's easier just to say that, because everybody has heard of Philadelphia, but may not have heard of the small town the person is actually from.

What??? I'm just the opposite. I DON'T want people think I'm from the City of Philadelphia. I always say I'm from the Philly burbs. You're are right, though, they are very different. The city unfortunately is largely a hell hole, unlike most of the burbs which are very nice and actually survivable.

It's pretty standard for people in the suburbs to identify themselves as living in the metro which is named after the central city. It isn't just a Philly thing. Or was your post supposed to be tongue in cheek?

Most of the people living in the Philaldephia suburbs are direct descendants of the people who built the city of Philadlephia, if they wish to refer to themselves as Philadlephians they should absolutely be granted that right.
Conversely A large percentage of the population now living in the city of Philadlephia basically glommed onto the city by happenstance, greatly accelerating its downfall I might add. When the forefathers of the suburban offspring lived in Philadlephia the crime rate was almost non existent, last year 391 murders-2800 shootings. I think Pilot1 is onto something. I'm right on board with him/her except for the saving graces of Center City,Chestnut Hill,Manayunk,Far NE and a few other isolated neighborhoods.
One could make the argument that the suburbs should rightfully claim the name Philaldephia and the city itself should be called Philaftermath.

Thanks, and I'm a he. I was born in the city but like many others of that era, my family moved to the burbs when I was three years old. So in effect, I can actually say I am from Philly as I was born on Broad Street. However, the city has declined as you say except for a few enclaves and I am very saddened by the crime, especially the gang voilence that permeates many areas. It seems that's al I see in the national news anymore about Philly.

Are you implying that the citizens of the "better parts" of Center City, Chestnut Hill, Manyunk, Far NE and other "isolated neighborhoods" are somehow, better or superior than the "other" residents of Philadelphia. And, if you are indeed implying such, please, tell what exactly, makes such esteemed individuals so much better than others?

Boy, you've got to watch what you say from one thread to another.
" I consider Quarkertown and the five counties that make up the Philly metro area "Philly". "
Maybe it's different when you're talking about Philly cheesesteaks.

BTW dorado, it's DELAWARE. Good to know how to spell your neighboring states. Growing up in Delaware, I always loved telling people that's where I was from -especially when we traveled out of the area. Much more unique then Philadelphia.
