Actually a few friends of mine got shot at not too long ago in Northern Liberties. There was a rape in the neighborhood. Newer residents (read: yuppies) are continually and relentlessly robbed at gunpoint. Unless you're a native of the neighoborhood (such as myself) you don't really have to worry about getting mugged, but the crime rate is pretty high for the neighborhood. Most of it never gets reported though.

I have friends at 5th & Poplar and at 6th & Girard. I'm in Northern Liberties all the time. As recently as two years ago you'd find me at Silk City on a Saturday at 3 in the morning - or maybe over at RUBA. I've certainly shut down the 700 Club more than a few times. I know what the neighborhood is like late-night and it's certainly far less sketchy than my own neighborhood. The neighborhood has clocked 3 murders in 5 years . . . and all of them seem to have revolved around fights at nightclubs on Girard or on Delaware Ave - clubs that are now gone.

You can pretty much stand anywhere in NoLibs and look east and see 3 condo towers, all over 23 floors, with a 4th going up right next to it, at Delaware & Poplar. You have a bunch of 6-8 story mixed-use bldgs. going up right now at Hancock Square. You have a 12-story condo bldg. that just went up last year at Brown & North American and another that isn't even finished yet near 2nd & Fairmount.

If you have friends who are getting shot at in NoLibs it might help to explain your perceptions of the neighborhood.
AFA "yuppies" being relentlessly robbed in the neighborhood . . . in the last 3 months there have been two robberies within the NoLibs boundaries. One of those two was with a weapon and that was at 4th & Spring Garden, on the fringe of the neighborhood in an office/warehouse district where no one lives, at 2 in the morning. So yeah, i'm not exactly shaking in my boots when it's time to head home from North Bowl.

Nutter's proposed laws would limit guns and gun permits for law abiding citizens, not just illegal guns which are already by definition illegal. Criminals don't follow laws, but I am all for getting ILLEGAL guns off the street.

Open your eyes and ears and stop ignoring the blatantly obvious- Philly has a long running record of being at the top of the charts for the most violent city.

I lived in the South Bronx in 1978. It doesn't mean I'm qualified to talk about what it's like there now. |
