I will be graduating this December with a degree is Social Work. I'm from Cleveland, Ohio and really want to move. I want to visit different cities to help me make the decision on where to go. Right now I'm torn between DC, Philly, NJ, and CT.

- Does anyone have any suggestions on places to visit while in Philadelphia?

In order to get the most out of your trip and not waste it you should pick up a trolly tour behind the Marriott hotel at 12th and Market St. (12th and Filbert) It is worth the money (27.00 for all day) They will show you all the sights and you can get on and off all day. You will see lots of places that you wouldn't find on your own and give you an overview of the city. Actually you should do this anytime you visit a city for the 1st time if it is available.

If I was thinking about a major move, the tourist trolley wouldn't be the way I would see the city. But that's just me. I would spend my time actually walking around where people live and work and get a feel for the neighborhoods around Center City and what it would be like to live there(eg., Rittenhouse, Fairmount, Bella Vista, Old City).

I agree with MLtimes. The tourist trolley is great for a visit, but if someone wants to move to the city, walking around neighborhoods is the way to go. Then after moving here, take the trolley tour.

Stay at a hotel in center city, and walk around. Explore Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square West, Society Hill, Bella Vista, Queen Village, Old City and Fairmount. Go at different times and on weekends. You will get a feel as to where you will be the most comfortable. Unless you need a car for work, don't bring one. You can join PhillyCarShare.

Okay, so this is the second post today where newmarlig has pointed out that I forgot to include WashWest as a great place to live.

Visity Fishtown, Northern Liberties, Old City Society Hill, Queen Village, Pennsport, Passyunk Square, Bella Vista, Graduate Hospital, Rittenhouse, Fitler Square, Logan Square, Fairmount, Chinatown, Wash West, University City, East Falls, Manayunk, and Mt. Airy.

If, after all of that, you aren't madly in love with the town then there's something wrong with you and you shouldn't move here.

But how would you know (in one day) what neighborhoods to walk around if you don't see them first on the trolly (at least within center city and the art museum district)? It would take weeks to walk all the neighborhoods on your own.

Who said the OP is only going to be here for one day?

You would know what neighborhoods to explore by posting a question and receiving an answer from Newmarlig, Solibs and me.

There is very little on a tourist trolley loop that would educate someone about where to live in Philadelphia. The argument that the trolley shows a visitor neighborhoods "at least within center city and the art museum district" is not accurate. I assume by "art museum district" you mean Fairmount, Spring Garden and perhaps Brewerytown and Francisville. The tourist trolleys roll right down the Parkway to the PMA and Rocky Statue, but never actually venture into any of these neighborhoods. Same with "center city" -- trolleys use Pine Street but how would you ever get a feel for the blocks and blocks of small streets and trinities in Wash West if all you see is the shops of "antique row." And a ride past the Betsy Ross House tells the OP absolutely nothing useful about the residential neighborhood of Old City (like the fact that you really want to live north of Market Street and that you probably need a car to get to a decent supermarket).
