As mentioned, the Reading Terminal Market is extremely popular, and an amazing place, just avoid it during the week over lunch! The Italian market is primarily out door, and offers incredibly affordable produce.

The sterotypical local foods of popularity in Philly are the hoagie, and the cheesesteak, and yes, we do these well. Pat's and Geno's are generally touted as the best ones, but I like Jim's at fourth and south. If cholesterol isn't your thing, and youre into a more sophisticated feel, try any of the restaraunts by Steven Starr or Mark Vetri.

For international food, there are tons of great speciality shops- stroll through a neighboorhood and you'll find plenty!

fresh, still warm pretzels, straight from the bakery on washington ave, are ridiculously cheap, and are some the the greatest things you could possibly eat.

I can say that the Philly experience is what you make it really, just like anywhere. I went to college here and ended up staying after graduation ('05). I can say that the city has improved A LOT for the younger crowd over the years, and I really started liking it. I enjoyed my time here its a convient city, I live in a nice spot and can get just about anywhere pretty quickly. Here's my take on it:

The Good-
Centrally located b/t 2 major cities (DC & NY) and you can get to either very cheaply and pretty quickly depending on where in the city you live. Getting to AC isn't bad either.

If you don't own a car its ok, SEPTA goes everywhere!

The food here is good, authentic, and NOT as expensive as other major cities

Restaurant Week is twice a year and City Sips is all summer

There are LOTS of FREE things to do, and specials via social media applications like Foursquare and SCVNGR

Some neighborhoods are pretty for outdoor activities

Housing is relatively cheap (1br apts range from $550-$1200, houses from $150k-$500k. This all depends on where in the city)

Its a diverse city

The Bad
The city is dirty, and there's a homeless issue

SEPTA smells and is often delayed. The workers have gone on strike every year the past 3yrs, and fares have increased, but the service hasn't gotten better. Trains stop at midnight and clubs close at 2am, you do the math on how to get home. There is a shuttle bus til 3-4am b/c there are some after hour spots

Crime is crazy b/c a lot of ex-cons live in the city working low wage jobs. Depending on where you live and what places you frequent, the crime will not affect you

Hipsters are driving up prices

Schooling sucks. Get your kid into a private, Friends, Catholic, specialty, or decent charter school if you want to give them a good shot at quality education

Philly is VERY segregated (a city of neighborhoods). People of color aren't welcome in Fishtown and certain parts of Port Richmond and South Philly, and if you're white stay away from North Philly.

Drugs

High car insurance b/c people are just bad drivers

Traffic

Eagles fans
