I want to move out east from KCMO. I am interested in Philly b/c it seems to have a lot to offer. Sports, culture, art, trendy areas, ya know, city life. I will be visiting for a week or so in mid september. I will be applying to grad school and my husband will be looking for a job in IT. We want to rent a 1 to 2 bedroom apartment in the city and our range is between 6-9 hundred.

I've read a lot about the crime on other blogs and honestly, I am from KC and pretty used to crime. (Not as a participant, lol, but aware that it is going on around me). I know KC is a smaller place but you might be surprised by the crime rate. My rule of thumb is if you are not involved in criminal things and are street smart (not walking alone at night, pay attention to your surroundings, carry pepper spray, have a security system on your home, don't move expensive things in during daylight, lol, lift weights for strength, lol) then you should be fine. I laugh but I am pretty serious.

Does anyone have any advice for me? Is philly a good place to live, what are my choices of neighborhoods? Any comments are welcome....

Mel from MO, you might want to post this questions as a separate thread.

Meanwhile, I noticed a recent post that has a few similarities to your post:
