You may also have better luck posting on the general PA board. Pottstown is not always considered a part of the Philadelphia metro area.

I live in Pottstown and while some neighborhoods are rough others are kind of nice. I'm trying to place King St. LOL hey I've only been here a couple years. typically the 500 blocks and up are ok. Avoid the blocks between 200-400 of most blocks. There is a criminal element in Pottstown and some will say the police dont care but I can see them trying to improve things. I have never not felt safe in my house.
There are some new businesses coming to Pottstown and there are some great things such as a nice library, farmers market, a couple nice bars (the new Brick House, Jack Cassidy's, and the Pour House for example). We have a movie theatre though its not state of the art. Theres a mall too.
Pottstown has a relatively new thing called "bike Pottstown". You can borrow a bike and use it to explore Pottstown or just get some exercise.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

I used to have to go to Pottstown a few times a year for work. I always had lunch on High St. Neat town , seems a bit stuck in the 50s but that's not always a bad thing. ( I don't know anything about crime there)
It also reminded me of Springfield (from the Simpsons). When you're coming down the hill towards downtown and you see the town spread out in front of you with the cooling towers from Limerick in the background . . . yeah, it's really creepy.

Pottstown Is a Good Safe Place to Live!
I have lived in Pottstown for 15 years, 12 of which I have lived in the 200 block of Chestnut Street, in the Old Pottstown Historic District. I have never...ever felt un-safe in my home or neighborhood. I have never had problems with any kind of criminal element. I walk my dog at nights. No problems. I bike and walk/run down to the river all of the time.
I think most people who have a negative perspective of Pottstown don't live here and read too much of the local paper, The Mercury (which is a very terrible paper...I wouldn't even use it to wrap up dead fish).
Pottstown has a great stock of homes for all kinds of buyers. The schools are great and you'll get more bang for your buck than buying in the snooty neighboring townships.
If you're thinking about relocating to Pottstown, just do your due diligence and check out the neighborhood you're looking to move to.

The only impression I have of Pottstown is the area around Pottstown Muni Airport as that is where I used to hangar my plane. I lived down Rt. 100 in Upper Uwchland Twp, (that snooty area ). I never felt unsafe in Pottstown and while it does have somewhat of a working class feel, it seemed fine.

I lived on king, washington, and chesnut.. in the 'bad' area. Crime only comes to you, when you involve yourself with it. I've seen a lot happen in my time there that most are oblivious to. But as others have said i've never felt unsafe there. I'd still walk the streets at any hour... though depending on your location the worst that can happen is people asking you where to buy some weed or trying to sell you a busted up cell.
