Actually back in the '40's, '50's and '60's more upscale neighborhoods (the kind with country estates) didn't have sidewalks. Then developers caught on to the idea that no sidewalk = more prestige and higher values for their developments that only aspired to be estates. Sidewalks are for tract houses. No sidewalks are for mansions. Who knew that sidewalks would become fashonable 40 years later?

Sidewalks are ugly. I grew up in a development with no sidewalks, it gives more of a country feel to the area and it was safe to play in the streets..

It's got nothing to do with lack of planning and intelligence..

Unfortunately back then there were fewer drivers on the road and people looked out for each other/had a conscience. Nowadays hit and runs are so common I wouldn't want my kids walking in the street for anything...another sad commentary on the state of America.
