Winter in Philadelphia
We are from Queensland Australia with the possibility of coming to seek medical treatment in Philadelphia.
We would be there for 3 weeks, have 3 weeks to travel and have to come back for 3 weeks. So we are looking for ideas to do (travel) in that time, and possibilities of cheap BUT SAFE places to stay.
I am also wondering what sort of clothing we would need. we will have 2 children with us, and don't even own a decent coat really. Think we're in for a shock??
Please offer any ideas.

What hospital and when will you be coming? Will you be renting a car or will you be using public transportation. While you will need winter coats, winters here really aren't that dreadful.

Depending where you are going in Florida check airtran.com and Southwest.com. There is also USAir. For housing, I'm not sure what you budget is. If you give an estimate that would be helpful.

basically as cheap as we can, without being unsafe.
I think they have monthly leases on places over there for maybe $1500??
I was also thinking of a house swap....
Would you have to fly from philadelphia to florida?
How easy to get around and see other things from Philadelphia...ie to go to new york for a day or something

That would be Hahnamann Hospial which is easily reached by our subway system and is very close to center city (where public transportation is excellent). You don't have to fly to Florida. Driving would take about two days. It's very easy to get to NYC via various methods and prices. And NYC is amazing around the holiday season. I suggest you post something on craigslist, under housing swap and say you want something in a safe area with easy access to Hahnamann for about $1,500 a month. Or maybe e-mail the hospital and see if they have any suggestions:
Hahnemann University Hospital-Philadelphia, PA
Good luck. I hope the medical treatment is successful!

You don't have to fly to Florida but most people I know do fly. I have relatives in Florida, they used to drive up to Philly (most of my family is in the Philly area) but eventually got tired of the long trip so they started flying. My family in Philly always fly down to see relatives in Florida, never driven.
NYC is pretty easy to get to, only about a 2 hour drive, there's also trains and buses that you can take - a very common and doable day trip from Philly. You can also also drive to Washington DC but I would consider that more of a weekend trip than day trip, it's about 3 hours. Some of the suburbs of Philly are worth seeing and obviously doable in a day, there was another topic about the best places to visit within an hour drive of Philly, that had a lot of good suggestions: http://www.city-data.com/forum/phila...-one-hour.html - That should keep you busy with day trips!

You've obviously never spend a winter in England if you think PA winters are bad, lol.

I'm not sure it would be an easy commute from Denver to Hahnemann Hospital.
To the OP, on your 3 weeks of travel, you could certainly drive to Florida and back, enjoy better weather, see plenty along the way and not feel rushed. As far as living, can somebody at the hospital help with this? There are certainly extended-stay hotels in the area, which may get pretty pricey. However, if you leave the area for those middle three weeks, this might be a better option.
