Well... I would guess that the majority of the 1.5 million people who live in Philadelphia (per City-Data figures) might disagree with your assessment... but you have the right to your opinion.

You say you've been here a total of three times, yet you say it's one of the biggest arm pits of American. You ar hardly a reliable source.

Thanks for all of your suggestions!
I'll start to look early next year for places. I guess most of my focus will be in Collingswood, NJ and different parts of Philly.

Two quick questions!
1) How's managing a car in a Philadelphia/parking situation? Will it be a battle to find a parking spot if I live along the river in towns like (Society Hill, Northern Liberties, etc.)
2) Can anyone suggest apartment complexes that are clean, have reasonable prices in either locations: Society Hill and the surrounding towns near that, as well as Collingswood, NJ?
Am I to assume that east to northeast (but not too far northeast, as I hear its more family oriented up there) Philly is a good place to live, from your suggestions?
Thanks! I'm about to make some listings of places I'd like to hit before I go searching.

If you're living in Center City or close by, parking will be inconvenient unless your building owns or has access to a garage. Perhaps not quite as bad as your NYC experience but close.
I'm a bit out of the loop on apartments these days... but I will say that "reasonable" in Center City is a relative term.
If you want to live close to the river, anywhere from Fishtown/Northern Liberties down to Queen Village/Bella Vista/Pennsport will keep you in or close to downtown living.

Society Hill and Northern Liberties are neighborhoods in Philadelphia. They're not towns. You won't find many apartment complexes in the city, none in Society Hill and perhaps a building or two in Northern Liberties. Most of Philadelphia is two or three story rowhouses. There are some apartment buildings in Center City and a few more in West Philly but most of them are in the Northwest of Northeast.
Parking is very difficult in Society Hill. It's moderately difficult in Northern Liberties. If you have to drive to work everyday you'll probably want to focus on NJ.
If you really want to live in the city then you should also be looking at trying to rent a parking space if you can't find an apartment that comes with one (it's usually cheaper to rent them separately anyway). Off-street spaces in my neighborhood rent for $125 a month. I would expect in NoLibs that they're probably about the same as the demand for parking is about the same.
