I assume that you are looking in the Philadelphia area because you think there is more of a chance of your husband finding work. That may be true. If you would like to be in a less crowded area and closer to Bergen county however, you may want to look in the Lehigh Valley. The schools are good and the housing prices are a little lower. Quakertown is the last town North in what's considered the Philadelphia area, and it's on the cusp of the Lehigh Valley.

We have rolling hills, and small towns but the cities of Allentown and Bethlehem are close and Philadelphia is just over an hour away and Manhattan is just an hour and a half. When we travel we have three airports to choose from - Allentown (15 minutes), Newark (1 hr 15 minutes) and Philadelphia (1 hour). I've lived in three other counties in the state and have enjoyed Lehigh County the most.

I've got to say though that I also would suggest finding a job first before worrying about a place to live. I've moved many times and no move has been without it's bumps.

If you're gonna look in Montgomery County, check out Ambler. Oreland is a very nice and quiet suburb about 5 mins from the Chestnut Hill area of Philadelphia. I would also look at Horsham, Willow Grove, nothing too far from 476 or 309. Remember, you have to travel east, then north to get to Bergen county and I don't know of any highways other than the PA Turnpike that will get you to NJ fast.

I'm not sure of the school system since I don't have kids, but I'm sure someone else can give you insight on that.
