Philadelphia is more comparable to Chicago than Chicago is to NYC.

Philadelphia is more comparable to Chicago than Pittsburgh is to Philadelphia.

Also you have to take into context the entire metro. This is no disrespect to Pittsburgh but this is where the appalachian region vs northeast professional classifications comes into full effect. The Pittsburgh area is a fine region but as previously noted Philadelphias poorest suburban county is wealthier than Pittsburghs wealthiest suburban county- by a large margin at that. The avg. median household incomes are almost double in suburban PHiladelphia as they are in suburban Pittsburgh.

You are selling the Philadephia area entirely too short, you have to give its due respect.

Rain, I've lived in Pittsburgh (obviously), I've lived in Philly, I've lived in NYC. I'm telling you, I don't get the comparision between Philly and NYC being similiar. To me, it's like a BIG version of Pittsburgh. I'm not saying this to pis people off, it's how I feel. Maybe if Philly was MORE diverse, had WIDER streets, had HUGE apt buildings, etc etc I could see it. But the fact is, it don't. And the average person walking the streets there, is ALOT different than your average NY'er also.

Philadelphia is much more similar to New York than Pittsburgh.

You have to realize Center City is one of the largest downtowns in the nation and in many ways has a Manhattan feel to it. I love New York, drove there countless times, and everytime I am in Center City, Manhattan comes to mind. The architecture, the bustling streets, the large residential population, the restaurants, bars...just everything. Of course Center City has its own feel with its narrow streets, but hey thats Philly for you. Pittsburgh on the other hand, is it not even an East Coast city. It is so hilly too!

I mean when I landed at the airport, then went on the highway towards downtown Pittsburgh, all I saw was highways and hills. Scarce amounts of urbanism to be found all around...and it was dreary in my experience. Then I head to a tunnel and after I came out of the tunnel...BOOM! Finally I saw city characteristics and downtown Pittsburgh was right there all in my face just 2 miles away.

However, drive up I-95 from the Philly airport...you instant urbanism and density far before you arrive center city. Drive on I-95 from Northeast Philly and head towards Center City, it is very reminisince of New York. The only difference is that New York has tall brownstone apts scattered all over the city and it is much more dense and its just massive, but the feel is similar. You get that feeling in Philadelphia too, just not nearly to the extent of NY...and I can't even begin to tell you how many people said Center City is like a small Manhattan. Pittsburgh has virtually no comparison to New York...and I don't find Pittsburgh similar to Philly AT ALL.

Go to the Pittsburgh forum. Look at the very first thread at the top, it'll be titled "Pittsburgh pics". Look thru some of those pages on there, and tell me you don't see Pittsburgh and Philly being similiar.

The Pittsburgh airport? It's located probably 40 miles outside of the city limits of Pittburgh. The terrain of the city of Pittsburgh, is alot different than Philly's. It's WAY too hilly to ever build an airport as close as Philly's.

Chicago's downtown could be a mini-Mannhattan, not Philly's.

Not to mention, the average Philadephian is alot less cosmopolitan than the NY'ers are. Closer to a Pittsburgh'er. I'm talking about the 'city' people now. Not people from the outskirts of Pittsburgh.

I can understand why people from Philly want the "NYC" comparision, but it ain't happening. Sorry.....Pittsburgh is more like it.........

Who is saying that Philadelphia compares to NYC?

Ainuline ran a poll here a few weeks ago asking the Philly board whether Philadelphia was comparable to NYC. The responses were.

So 97% of Philadelphians posted on this poll thinks Philadlephia IS NOT very comparable to NYC. You seem to be trying to make a point that doesnt exist. It seems like you have an axe to grind with Philadelphia by making an accusation that simply isnt there. To be honest with you its sounds like you have some insecurity issues in regards to Pittsburgh.

I left Pittburgh 15 years ago, I'm not "insecure" about a city that I don't even live in anymore. See, this is my point, I'm giving an un-bias opinon on this matter.

I'm glad that YOU finally cleared this matter up. Maybe the people who do think that NYC and Philly are similiar, haven't travelled much.

Hearing things like "mini-Mannhattan", just blows my mind. 'If' it were true, I'd glady say so, but of course it ain't.

By the way, did you take a look at soom of those Pittsburgh pics? See anything that could be mistaken for Phiily (especially South Philly)?

Manhattan is 13 sq miles The downtown portion of Center City is about 1 sq mile if that. Obviously it doesnt have the mass of buildings or people that Manhattan has but is that one sq mile 1/13th of what manhattan is? Alot of people would argue yes and then some. I think thats what people mean by saying its a sliver of Manhattan.

There are 1.5 million people in Manhattan

90,000 people live in Center City. 150,000 if you include University City non summer.

Downtown Pittsburgh has 3,000 people.

9 of 10 of Pa.s' leading night club liquor and food sales are in Center City Philadelphia.

Is Center City Philadelphia comparable to Manhattan? No

Is Center City about the closest sliver of Manhattan you will see after Chicago? Yes

Mannhattan is 24 Sq MILES!....Not 13!..... Atleast get your facts straight before posting 'stats'!....

P.S. That "sliver of 1/13th, just shrank to about 1/25th! Call that a "mini-Mannhattan" is an UNDERSTATEMENT!

Relax slugger. You tend to get cantankerous when people disagree with you.

I stand corrected Manhattan is 13 miles long not 13 sq miles, I erred not the first time and it wont be the last. Sorry big guy, I'll try to be more precise in the future.
