I am considering a move to Glenside but the property taxes seem to be prohitive.

Is Hatboro a good alternative for a simliar vibe (older homes, nice little walkable town, family-friendly, good schools, etc)?

Very similiar, although a little smaller. Glenside has the added attractions of a concert theatre and a farmer's market. I live about a 5 min. drive from the center of Hatboro and it's always very busy there.

are the demographics the same? I've read in other posts that Hatboro is a little "dumpy".

I wouldn't say that Hatboro proper is dumpy. It's a nice little one streeter. If you travel that street (York Rd) to the south, you enter Willow Grove, and that's dumpy. Once you get to Hatboro and continue north, it's not. Also, just to the east of Hatboro is Huntingdon Valley, and that is not dumpy at all.

As far as demographics, I'd say you have a better chance for diversity in Glenside. Glenside borders more African-American areas, and I'd also say it's a little more gay friendly. Hatboro is pretty much white, surrounded by pretty much white, except for a large Mexican contingent in Warminster, the township to the north.

Isn't Moreland Manor a subdivision of 50s cape cod homes on the south side of Hatboro , just off York Rd. getting more diverse? My sister bought a house there and she told me that a few AA, Hispanic and Asian families have moved in. My husband and I have visited with her in 2006 and the area seemed nice except for one neglected rundown home ( due to the owner dying and the estate being tied up in court)on the street of my childhood home. We now live in Columbus Ohio and cannot get to the Philly area that often.

Not sure. I live in Huntingdon Valley, not Hatboro, so it's not like I drive around the little neighborhoods there. My son's elem. school is in Hatboro, but it's in Upper Moreland Township, while the town of Hatboro's kids are in Hatboro-Horsham school district. I will say that while there are a few AA and Hispanics in his school, the majority are white.

The part of Horsham Road that solibs speaks of is not in Hatboro, but Horsham. There are signs that clearly state the boundaries along with some history of the borough-Horsham Road in Hatboro is a 2 lane, 25 mph street that people do walk on to get to the old school feel of Main Street (of course, like anywhere, you have idiots who think it is okay to fly through residential areas). There are many older residents in Hatboro which is why you see many houses that are not as modern as those in Horsham or other areas that have a lot of developments. What I have noticed is that as younger people move into these houses some are being updated. It depends on what you are looking for, but my opinion was that a small old town has more charm than a new development. I am very pleased with our decision to move to this area. Hatboro, Horsham, Upper Moreland are all nice places to live. It is for the most part a busy area, but there are a lot of benefits that go along with it.
