Genos and Pats seriously suck. They are famous and tourists flock there (along with Jims on South Street), but having lived my entire life in Philadelphia I can say with absolute certainty that there are only two places that I consider to be "the best" and then there is a HUGE dropoff to the rest of the field.
1. John's Roast Pork - 14 Synder Ave (South Philly)
2. Ch1nk's Steaks - 6030 Torresdale Ave (Northeast) - the "1" is really an "i" and was edited out for racial reasons but it's not a racial slur in this case, Ch1nk was the nickname of the original owner before it was a highly common racial term, and the family has chosen NOT to change the name of the place.
And by the way, John's Roast Pork is not just Roast Pork or Roast Pork on a roll. They make the greatest cheesesteak in the world. Chinks is also great... almost as good as John's but not quite. I'm fat and have eaten cheesesteaks my whole life from many different places claiming to be the best. There are soooooo many places better than Pat's or Genos!!

I love cheesesteaks but I wouldn't ever eat one with cheese whiz! No way! What for?! Some good white cheese on it - now you're talkin'! Plenty of onions and mushrooms and peppers....and preferably not rib eye....much rather have any other steak but rib eye....(although I'd still eat it anyway...and it's gotta be HUGE! :-)
One more thing - no way will I ever say "wit" or "wit out"! :-)
Still, Philly will always be THE cheesesteak place!

If you are on South street, skip the huge line at Jim's. Walk on down a couple blocks to about 3rd and south and look for a hole in the wall place called Iskabibbles. They make better food and you'll be done eating by the time the tourists get a chance to order at Jim's.

When I used to live in Philly, I used to get an amazing Cheesesteak near the airport, I think it was in Essington, it was literally a convenience store and they made amazing Cheesteaks in the back including a mega huge Cheesesteak. Does anyone know what place I'm talking about?
