What is Jenkintown like?
Looking at some North suburbs (Montgomery & Bucks County) and am wondering what Jenkintown is like? I am looking for a walkable town - where I can hopefully find an older home (with some character) within walking distance to shops, restaurants, etc. - in the 400 - 500K range. Very good schools a necessity. Husband looking at a job in Horsham. The other town that I'm looking closely at is Doylestown - just trying to find that "main street" type of atmosphere within an easy drive of Horsham.
Thanks for any opinions on Jenkintown and/or other towns that you think might fit the bill. Thanks!

Jenkintown's nice, and has a small walkable district on Old York Road (a few shops and restaurants). Google Jenkintown, PA and look around York Road & West Avenue. If you do go there, check out the Drake Tavern. My parents go there about 3 times a week, and it's getting that neigbhorhood bar feel. You can find houses near there, although I have no idea what they cost, but I wouldn't be ditching the car. You can also look into Glenside, which is nearby.
As for Doylestown, that also has a small walkable area, but I've never been there, so I can't say how it compares.

For what you said you want, Jenkintown fits the bill. Doylestown would as well, but the prices are probably a bit higher. An advantage Jenkintown has is that it is a much shorter and easier train ride into the city. A couple of decent restaunts besides the Drake - 211, which is more upscale, La Pergola and Mirna's, which I haven't been to in a while so I can't comment on the current quality but both were Mediterranean/Middle Eastern food, there's a new Italian restaurant in the train station which was decent but crowded the one time I went. You also have the movie theater, a good coffee shop, and a couple of interesting stores (toy shop, gift shop). The main street (York Rd.) is busy with traffic which can take away some charm.

Jenkintown seems like a nice fit. I happen to think Abington, which is directly next to Jenkintown, has better schools. Less of a town though.
