If I am offered a job teaching at the C.C. of Philadelphia, we want to be in the city limits for the SSI and services for our daughter with autism and a great Autism Center in Philadelphia. Outside the limits, we'd have to pay for several services! However, we know nothing about the town. We can figure out the extremely unsafe areas somewhat by house prices, but we're really in the dark and would need to move in August. We have two special needs kids-one would probably not be integrated into schools and the other we want to put into a sliding scale or scholarship jewish day school, so schools themselves aren't the main priority right now-safety and affordability on one Community College teacher's salary is...

Any ideas? We could go as small as 1,200 and expect to only find townhouses, though we've seen a few private homes (but don't know anything about the areas)

We'd appreciate any advice GREATLY! our last move we were bamboozled by the realtor and it's been awful. We're coming from Oregon, and it costs a lot to come out and look, as we'd be staying in a motel/hotel, so if we have realtors/houses to see already arranged ahead of time in a 2 or 3 day period, that would save so much money!

Please advise!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!! Kristen and family

You will be able to find something (decent and safe) in Northeast Philly. Why don't you checkout Craig's List.

Philadelphia
Apts/Housing
search for: Northeast
in: Real Estate for Sale

Good luck. You are moving to a great city.

Mosh where are you originally from?

If you have never been to the east coast before you are in for quite a jolt of culture shock moving to Philly from Oregon.

As always do your homework and definitely make a visit before making any drastic decisions. Philly is a great city but it isn't for everyone.

new marlig had a good suggestion with The Far Northeast. I would add Manayunk, Roxborough and Packer Park(the stadium district neighborhood). You may be able to find a modest condo in center city for $200K. Center City is by far the best neighborhood in Philly but its very expensive but there are bargains to be had so its worth an inquiry.

Best of luck.

If you post some addresses you are interested in maybe soemone can give you the thumbs up or thumbs down.

Rainrock - I doubt if a condo (with at least two bedrooms) would be available in Center City for 200k, plus there would be the additional expense of parking. Your Manayunk, Roxborough and Packer Park suggestions are very good though. In addition, Pennport in South Philly would be worth a look.

It would be good to see addresses.
