I grew up in the Philly area and based on a few different things I dont think there is any nice area of Philly anymore...Obviously, many people will disagree with me but my opinion still remains.
I would say look around Havertown, Newtown Square or the Main Line
areas for an apartment and use Septa to go into the city. The cost of
transportation might be higher but the quality of life you will get in a 650.00 range apartment will be much better outside of the city.

I assume you will be working in center city. It is a great area of a great city. If you go to craigslist, you can find some studio apts. in center city in your price range. They will be small. It would be best if you don't have a car, you will be able to walk to work, since this is a very walkable city. If your office is not in center city post where it it.

I would be one of those that disagrees with your stance. Center City is a fabulous place to live, theres probably a dozen neighborhoods that make up center city. Fitler Square,Rittenhouse Square,Soceity HIll,Bella Vista,Washington West, Queens Village,Art Museum,Spring Garden,Fairmount,Old City,University City, Spruce Hill would all be great if you are going to be working in Center City.

Its pretty expensive and at $650 your best bet is looking for a roomate or roomates.Having roomates may also help your transition into the city as well as get you into a better aprtment tower, complex, or house.

Craigslist.com is a great site for apartment sharing. Unfortunately $650 doesn't get you much in the Philly area if you want to go it alone. You may be able to find a small studio in that range but thats about it.

Good luck. If you come up with any specific places that interest you post location and someone here will give you the thumbs up or thumbs down.

I wouldn't put too much stock in what ^ said about Philly. There are many incredible sections of this city. Center City is one of them.

Great info by newmarlig

You did not mention what area you will be in for this externship. We may be able to better asist you. Also, what are you interested in. Do you like neghborhoods where you can walk to nice restaurants, pubs and good transportation? Are you Ok with a more suburban location where you have to drive? What are you looking for?

If you're working in Center City and can't afford to live there, definitely sublet an apartment in University City/West Philly. A lot of students at Penn and Drexel have apartments that they need filled while they're elsewhere for the summer. You'll be able to find a good deal there for a May 1 move date. From there it's an easy bus/el/trolley ride into CC. It's a nice area and it's fairly quiet in the summer but very accessible to the bustle of Center City.

Check philadelphia.craigslist.org under the rooms/shares or sublets section.
