Northeast Philly Areas?
Hello - I'm in the process of looking into some different areas of Philly to move to, and I keep leaning towards the Northeast. I don't really have a timeline for moving, just planning ahead/researching for right now. Eventually my boyfriend and I would be renting (no children, so good schools aren't really a priority), and I was wondering which areas of Northeast Philly are good (safe, close to transportation since I work in Center City, affordable - no more than $1200/month) and which areas should I avoid? I think safety and my commute into Center City are my top concerns. Thanks to all who reply!

Avoid Wyomissing, Oxford Circle and even sections of Lawncrest and areas south. Tacony is okay but is getting rough around the edges. You may want to consider Mayfair. The Route 66 runs along Frankford Avenue to the Bridge & Pratt station, where you can catch the Market-Frankford El to town. Also, maybe even the Bustleton section will have something in your price range. The Route 56 bus runs into the same station. Anything further north will just add time to your commute. Good luck!

I'd favor Fox Chase - nice neighborhood and close to regional rail line (R8).

I agree with the Fox Chase advice. I'd also consider looking into Lawndale/Burholme area (north of Levick/South of Cottman from Tookany Creek on the west to Whitaker/Algon on the East).

Another nice area is Parkwood. It's mostly red brick rowhomes, but there are many duplexes for rent at the ends of the rows. Good, friendly area. You'd take the 20 bus to Bridge and Pratt and then hop on the El to get into CC.

Personally I'd just move to the burbs over the NE and avoid city wage taxes and rough around the edges neighbors, paying more for less, etc. Check out Manayunk, South Philly, Northern Liberties and Fishtown. All closer to center city and have some sort of younger hip vibe going on...I would also say you can commute from South Jersey and places in Delaware County more quickly than from the NE.
