Lightbulb The Best Area to Move to In Philadelphia from Cali

i am thinking of moving to Philadelphia from California in the next year and just want to know the best place in the city to move to for someone who knows nothing of the area or state. Where would be the best place to live for the nightlife, less crime, etc. i would like to get an apartment or possibly rent a room it would just be me and possibly going to a city or community college hopefully in the area.

Which colleges are you considering? Do you have a job lined up while you're in school? What is your budget range?

The most nightlife these days can be found in Old City although there are plenty of other Center City (downtown) neighborhoods where you can have a good time as well. As you can imagine, Center City as a whole is a very expensive area to live.

Other more affordable options might include Manayunk and University City. Manayunk, the furthest away from Center City, is a hilly area where twentysomethings and older long-timers co-exist amongst the restaurants, bars and retailers on Main Street. University City is a socioeconomic mix of people from Penn faculty and students to West African immigrants to others simply priced out of Center City.

Basically you'll want to live downtown. It's where you'll have the most fun and many colleges - including the Community College of Philadelphia - are close or easy to get to from Center City. The question will be: would you be able to afford downtown? If you're the "typical" college student, you'll be searching for a roommate at best.

Check the rooms for rent section on craigslist.. Good spots for college students are Northern Liberties, Upenn/drexel area of center city, and the fairmount/art museum area. You could rent a room for about $500 in those areas, or rent your own apartment for more like $900.

why dont we switch. i'm trying to move out to California. we can do a house switch, like in that corny movie the holiday. ....not that i saw it...my wife likes it.

if you want to leave beautiful california for philly, than i would suggest living in bella vista or queen village. theres tons of nightlife and you can get anywhere via public trans buses. and rent is cheaper than in old city.

Community College is at 17th and spring garden, just off the broad st line. Center City is the best place for nightlife and ease of getting around. Price is also a factor though there are students in center city, particularly east of broad
