Clearly everyone's definition of "best schools" is different, such that, by my criteria, I would consider some of the independent schools on the Main Line (Episcopal, Baldwin, Haverford, Shipley) and one of the Catholic schools in the city (St. Joseph's Prep) to be the "best" in the Philadelphia area.

They are townships and school districts.

Lower Merion SD has Lower Merion HS and Harriton HS
Tredyffrin/Easttown SD has Conestoga HS

Not so much "city lights" but I would recommend Newtown/Upper Makefield in Bucks County. You will be within 30 minutes from the city, AMAZING schools (council rock, check the ratings posted earlier in this thread), taxes aren't horrible, nice community feeling in the town.

clotheshorse,
I would recommend that you consider moorestown. It was ranked #1 place to live by the money magazine. The schools are great. It has a very nice but small downtown. One of the cleanest places in South Jersey. Excellent commute, close to the major highways. Minutes from Philadelphia downtown.

City lights? No. Views? In certain areas. Chester County has several fabulous school districts (Downingtown and West Chester) with an Amtrak line that goes from Harrisburg to NY 14 times/day. $500-600K will get you a nice house with an acre or so but you're 35 miles from Center City out here.
