Yeah, really. Of course the two typical trolls come out to sour a positive thread...

I wasn't aware of pollyanna limitations here, and until things improve in the city...negative perceptions will actually outweigh the positive.

There needs to be a positive thread about Philly. As a Philly resident, I know the problems of the city all too well. I see the wage tax taken out of my paycheck. I have seen the blighted areas up front as I have to travel to North Philly for work and class at Temple. I know we have a city council that can't tell the difference between their arse and hole in the ground. I have done my fair share of waiting for SEPTA. So I don't need suburbanites who only come to Philly for Phillies' games to tell me about the problems of the city. For all the problems Philadelphia has, I still want to stay here. I have no desire to ever live in Montgomery County or New Jersey.

Since moving to Philadelphia in Sept. 2007, I have met a lot of people who enjoy Philadelphia. I have met people who want to be a part of the city turn around. A growing number of Philadelphians are optimistic about the city. Too often we think for a city to turn around it has to be a top down approach. That's not true, it is from a bottom up approach. Over the past few decades, the people of Philadelphia have been responsible for reinventing the city. Block by block the city's residents, lifelong and newcomers alike, have had a hand in turning the city around. We are still in the process, the cards are stacked against us, but we succeed.

Philly is a big city, yet feels like a small town. It is a town where the buildings are filled character, as if they have a story to tell. The city has something for everyone. Only in Philly can someone be both an individual and be part of something bigger. There is no mold that one needs to fit into.

If you're property taxes $4k lower in the city than a suburb (that's true for some), you need to make over $100k to offset the burden. mind you, if you're retired, Philly is a great place. you don't pa the wage tax and you get free bus and transit. That said, I like it because I can walk and bike it everywhere. sure there are interesting restaurants in the burbs but there are so many more here and close together as well. I can take the subway to watch the Phillies and ride my bike everywhere. things have improved a lot over the years, the schools are bad now, but they used to be horrendous. without street, the PPD seems to be back in competent hands. the wage tax is lower, thanks to Rendell. People do seem more outgoing and sociable. I like being able to bike to the park, rather than drive my bike there, and then ride. I hope to stay here and buy a house, but with the hope that things will continue to improve. my number one gripe is the lack of jobs. so often you have to commute to the burbs to work, and working downtown is one of the more enjoyable places to work. the city's business tax policy is asinine.

LOVE Philly! Although I do not currently live there I visit once or twice a yr. It has some of the best eating in the country. No where, and I mean no where can one get a REAL hoagie like Philly offers. I visited last week for 4 days and was in food heaven the entire time. American history is awesome to see firsthand, awesome outdoor biking/walking trails. It's just a unique city that is huge but very easy to navigate and get around. Not to mention the great culture of the metro area, so much diversity. Great sports fans and I actually found people to be very friendly. Had to ask a few people about things during my stay and ALL were very nice and helpful. If my wife would consent, I'd move to the region in a heartbeat. LOVE YA PHILADELPHIA

There is a lot in this thread about why one should live or not live in Philly compared to its suburbs. What about compared to the rest of the country?
