That being said Baltimore is not a bad place if you know which areas to avoid and there are plenty of nice neighborhoods outside of the Inner Harbor area such as Canton, Fells Point, Mount Vernon, Hampden, Federal Hill/Locust Point, Charles Village, etc. Also the MARC trains now run seven days a week on the Penn Line so access into DC is pretty easy.
If they could only extend MARC trains to Newark, DE, it would be great for both regions.

Amen to what you say about "Balamer" where I was born and raised but fear to tread now.

I had various experiences in Baltimore over about 30 years. I remember when they started cleaning up Fels Point. It was so scary that I wouldn't go there. I was working in Owings Mills at the time. The locals were baffled that I had no fear of Philly but wouldn't set foot in Fels Point.

I'm a bit baffled too, southbound. Was my impression that back in the day Fells Point like its neighbor Canton was rough and gritty, blue collar, but not dangerous like the ghetto areas. Heh, when my ancestors got off the boat in 1915 they settled in Canton because that's where all the "Polocks" like them were confined. They must be turning over in their graves at real estate values and taxes in Canton since its "gentrification."

Fells Point was dangerous at that time. Lots of rapes & robberies. If you're female that = dangerous. Baltimore's news is different. It was in the newspapers but not so much on tv. (Whereas in Philly the unofficial slogan has always been If it bleeds it leads.)

That's a statement! But, based on my little experiences with both cities, Philadelphia felt comfortable to me, where Baltimore not as much.
