Not surprising. Philly has the worst air, water and land. What did you expect?

There are alot more issues then environmental here. According to the report, the researchers took into consideration data on smoking, drinking, obesity, exercise and fruit and vegetable consumption. Granted, Philly isn't the healthiest place in the country but most older industrial cities have the same problems.

Bingo. This has to be the one of the most cigarette happy cities in the country. Also the overall dietary habit of most citizens leaves a lot to be desired...hoagies, cheesesteaks, greasy "chinese" food, fried chicken...etc.

The self-controllable elements of prevention are not being utilized.

Philly has a very large afro-american population and I think they smoke more than other races, plus they are at a higher risk for lung cancer.

The native Caucasian population is actually more likely smokers than the African American population. Firsthand experience anyway.

Dietary issues could probably be saddled more on the African American community, though that's a byproduct of accessibility to quality options for many thanks to the lack of decent (or any) grocery stores in much of the city.

This is correct! Also, the city has a high level of alcoholism. It is safe to say 18% of residents have a buzz on right now as we speak. People need to take responsibilty for themselves or suffer the consequences. I have not eaten an Italian Hoagie or cheesesteak in 3 years. On occasion maybe I'll eat something fried, but not often. And, Im lucky I drink 6 beers in a week. I have not drank a shot or cocktail in 2 years.

It is common knowledge that poorer populations have poorer diets, less access to healthcare, no insurance, are uneducated about health. These are the things that make Philly so unhealthy on paper. I will say that smoking and drinking are also great past times in the city and suburbs.

Alcohol is not unhealthy, as evidenced by the Mediterranean Diet which features a glass or two of wine daily with dinner. Many Americans as usual have taken something good and pushed it to excess, resulting in a backlash where it's not seen as acceptable at all in some views. Moderation is the key.
