Default moving to philly from the bay area

Hi,
My husband and I are thinking about moving to Philly from the SF Bay Area (jobs are tough here now with are horrible budget crisis and I'm a teacher!) and are looking for a good neighborhood in Philly where we can actually buy a home in the next year or two. Ideally we want something that is easy to commute to/from, nice, but still has an urban-ish and is liberal as well as diverse. A friend recommended West Mount Airy and I was wondering what people thought of the neighborhood, how safe it is and how long it takes to get to Center City from their, by car and also on public transportation.

Or....are their other neighborhoods that might be a good fit for a young progressive couple planning on having a family in the near future?

Thanks

It is great area and easy to get into town and a great school district. I am a realtor and it is a great place to live and to commute.
