Moving To Phili: Do we need a car?
My husband and I are moving to Phili in a few months. He will be working at U Penn but we've been told that the best place to live is in Center City (near a sq?). We're from NY and in our late 20's... Does anyone know if we need a car? How hard will it be for him to commute without one and how hard will it be for me to function without one to run errands and do normal things (I work from home but don't want to be stuck there).
Thanks!

1. It's Philly - not Phili.
2. You are talking about Rittenhouse Square.
3. You definitely DO NOT need a car. Public transportation to Penn is simple and quick. Center city is very walkable and you will have no problems doing your errands, etc.
Welcome!

If you're going to live in Center City I think you can do nicely without a car. Your husband can catch the Market-Frankford El to U of P. As far as shopping goes you should be able to travel just about anywhere in the city using public transportation. Good luck.

on a nice day he can walk to work. Philly is much more compact than NY, at least that part of it is.

Why not live in University City? It's where UPenn is located, it's a nice area, and you have immediate access to Center City via the Market-Frankford El.
BTW, "Philli" erks me too, but I've learned to ignore it.

No car needed in center city and the circle around CC
Welcome to Philly ..or ..Philadelphia .. lol .. green for Eagles or red for Phillies
Use a taxi or car-share to run errands that are beyond a walk
With a taxi .. you get to where you need to be .. shop .. for the ride back home or after a dinner out.
Car-share is for multi-stops or suburban trips
Otherwise .. walks.. bus/train and if you have the chops .. bike ..
The cost of parking (if you find it) and insurance make the other options more attractive.
